Stephanie Szanto is a highly acclaimed Swiss – Slovak mezzosoprano, composer, and producer based in Switzerland. Renowned for her exceptional vocal versatility, she effortlessly bridges the gap between classical opera, jazz, contemporary avant-garde, and traditional Swiss yodeling.
She completed her classical vocal training at the Hochschule der Künste Bern and the Swiss Opera Studio, subsequently earning her Master of Solo Performance with highest honors from the Hochschule Luzern – Musik under Prof. Barbara Locher. Parallel to her classical education, she deeply immersed herself in jazz singing and composition, establishing a unique stylistic duality that defines her career. Her talent has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Edwin Fischer-Stiftung First Prize, the Friedl Wald Foundation award, and scholarships from Migros Kulturprozent.
As a versatile stage performer, Szanto has appeared in major Swiss venues such as the Luzerner Theater (debuting as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel), Bühnen Bern, and Theater St. Gallen. Her concert repertoire spans from classical oratorios to boundary-pushing contemporary projects, including collaborations with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and performances at the Kunsthaus Zürich. She is also widely known for her creative crossover projects, most notably her duo The High Horse, which reimagines vintage pop songs through an avant-garde lens. Alongside her active performing and recording career, she shares her expertise as a vocal pedagogue at the Musik-Akademie Basel

Swiss-Slovak Mezzosoprano Stephanie Szanto is an internationally acclaimed opera and concert

singer, composer, pop/jazz musician, and lecturer at the Music Academy Basel. Alongside her

classical repertoire, she performs crossover projects and has appeared as a guest artist in jazz,

pop, and rock productions.

Her debut art song and crossover album was recently released to international critical acclaim and

received six nominations for the prestigious Opus Klassik Awards. Her concerts and artistic projects

have been broadcast by major radio stations including SWR, WDR, SRF, and France Bleu.

About the Masterclass

This masterclass welcomes singers of all styles as well as instrumentalists—even those who have

never sung before.

Whether you are looking for detailed technical guidance or a concise understanding of how the

voice works, the focus will be on your voice, your questions, and your unique musical personality.

Classical singers are invited to bring repertoire from opera, art song, oratorio, and concert

literature. We can also explore scenes, dramatic interpretation, text analysis, and role preparation in

greater depth.

Classical singers who would like to experiment with pop or musical theatre repertoire are equally

welcome. How can one adapt vocal technique so that the sound moves beyond a purely classical

aesthetic while remaining healthy, authentic, and artistically convincing?

Likewise, pop, jazz, and musical theatre singers who wish to explore classical repertoire are warmly

invited. How can classical singing be approached in a technically efficient and healthy way? We will

work together to find solutions that suit your individual voice and style.

Instrumentalists are also encouraged to participate, whether they are curious about singing for the

first time or wish to deepen their vocal skills. Professional musicians often have a strong intuitive

understanding of singing and seek to recreate an inner vocal quality through their instruments.

This masterclass offers an opportunity to develop that connection further.
