Double Bass competition
More than a competition —
a space for growth
The Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf International Double Bass Competition is not just a competition. It is a space where every double bassist – regardless of the result – leaves with something valuable: with detailed feedback from each member of the international jury, published for all, with a sense of fair judgment and friendships that extend beyond the leaderboard.
On the podium is a jury made up of players and teachers who have gone through the same path themselves. Their ratings are public, comparable and specific – not numbers hidden in the organizer’s drawer, but a tool for the growth of every contestant.
“One of the foremost objectives of the K. Ditters von Dittersdorf International Double Bass Competition is to ensure the highest possible degree of objectivity in the evaluation of all contestants.”
Slovak Double Bass ClubThree pillars of competition
Radical evaluation transparency
The scoring of each judge is public. Each contestant can compare how each member of the jury evaluated him individually — and compare himself to others. No other double bass competition does this.
An exceptional international jury
The jury consists of active soloists and teachers of the world’s top art schools and orchestras — artists who themselves have gone through the same path as the contestants.
Community,
not just results
Throughout the event, we consciously support the building of friendly relations between contestants, judges and organizers by creating opportunities for informal meetings, lectures and symposiums.

Detailed explanation of categories — age overlap
▾A few examples:
A 16-year-old pupil attending a primary school of art shall compete in Category I.C, whereas a 16-year-old student attending a secondary school of art shall be placed in Category II.A.
Similarly, a 19-year-old student of a secondary school of art shall be assigned to Category II.B, while a 19-year-old student enrolled at a university or academy shall be placed in Category III.A.
Additional explanation for categories II.A 15–17 years. · II.B 18–20 years · III.A 18–22 years:
The age ranges of Categories I.C and II.A, as well as II.B and III.A, overlap owing to the structure of the Slovak education system. Elementary schools of art (ZUŠ – základná umelecká škola) admit pupils from the age of five and allow them to continue their studies beyond the point at which, typically around the age of fifteen, some students transfer to secondary schools of art offering a more advanced level of instruction. These secondary institutions, known as Konzervatórium in Slovakia, provide six-year programmes of study, thereby creating an overlap with universities and academies, which students may enter from the age of eighteen.

Thomas Martin
🇬🇧 United Kingdom — Former solo double bassist, London Symphony Orchestra
Thomas Martin is one of the biggest figures in the double bass world of the last sixty years. He has twice held the position of principal double bassist of the London Symphony Philharmonic — one of the most respected orchestras on the planet — and has also played in the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. His series of recordings of the music of Giovanni Bottesini is still a gramophone benchmark: the Gramophone Magazine Record of the Year and Sunday Times Record of the Year awards are no small feat.
In addition to his playing career, Martin is a respected educator — he taught at the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal College of Music and held the International Chair of Double Bass at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. And that’s not all: in almost four decades, he has personally built more than 160 double basses under his brand. A man, a player, a teacher, a luthier — that’s how the chairman of the jury sets the bar.
Lorraine Campet won the title of “Révélation Soliste Instrumental” at the French Victoires de la Musique 2025 — France’s most prestigious classical music award. She is the solo double bassist of the Orchester de l’Opéra de Paris and previously worked in the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France. He plays the extraordinary instrument of Pietro-Antonio Testore. Winner of the Leopold Bellan, Bass 2014 Amsterdam and Bottesini Competitions.
Roman Patkoló is the winner of the first ever international Sperger competition (2000) — one of the most important double bass competitions ever. Since 1999, he has been a member of the Bassiona Amorosa quartet ensemble, with which he performs all over the world. As a Slovak soloist, he promotes double bass literature at home and abroad.
Miloslav Gajdoš is a teacher at the JAMU secondary school of art in Brno and a composer whose works for double bass are included in the repertoire of this competition as compulsory compositions. His Toccata SDBC and other compositions have won a place on double bass stages around the world. It combines the player experience with a pedagogical and compositional match.
Artem Chirkov is the solo double bassist of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic, one of the oldest and most important musical institutions in Russia. Winner of the Bradetich International Competition — competitions with a prize exceeding $30,000, including a debut recital at Carnegie Hall. President of the Russian Double Bass Society and founder of the international festival Double Bass World.
Piotr Zimnik has been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2022 — an orchestra that most musicians consider the pinnacle of the orchestral world. A graduate of the Karaján Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and JAMU Brno. Before that, he held the position of co-principal double bassist of the Helsinki Philharmonic and permanent collaborator of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Juraj Kukan is an active performer and teacher rooted in Slovak musical life. He cooperated with the Slovak Philharmonic and regularly participates in Slovak Double Bass Club events. His teaching practice leads him directly to the question that the Dittersdorf competition poses to every contestant: where exactly lies the limit of a player’s potential.
Since 2020, Ján Prievozník has been the deputy head of the double bass section of the Orchestra of the Slovak National Opera — an institution where every rehearsal and every evening in front of the audience place high demands on precision, musicality and collective interplay. Active chamber musician, collaborator of the Haydn Ensemble and Harmonique Musique à Presbourg.
At the age of six, Maria Krykov chose the biggest instrument in the room at a music school in Helsinki — and this decision led her to the position of solo double bassist of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin (from 2022) and co-principal double bassist of the Helsinki Philharmonic. She was a guest at the Berlin and Royal Concertgebouw Philharmonics. Winner of the Sperger, Markneukirchen and Bottesini competitions (2nd prize, ex aequo, 2019).
Marek Švestka works in the Brno Philharmonic and is also the artistic director of the Brno Double Bass Orchestra — an ensemble that makes the double bass a protagonist, not an accompaniment. Teacher at JAMU in Brno and organizer of double bass cultural life in the Czech Republic. His enthusiasm for the instrument is contagious.
Juraj Valenčík is a Slovak double bassist who built his career in one of the most important Scandinavian orchestras — the Helsinki Philharmonic. He moves equally freely in the classical symphonic repertoire as well as in chamber music and jazz, collaborating with ensemble partners such as Brünnwerk. It gives the double bass a width that few can imagine.
