About the competition

More than a competition —
a space for growth

The Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf International Double Bass Competition is not just a competition. It is a space where every double bassist – regardless of the result – leaves with something valuable: with detailed feedback from each member of the international jury, published for all, with a sense of fair judgment and friendships that extend beyond the leaderboard.

On the podium is a jury made up of players and teachers who have gone through the same path themselves. Their ratings are public, comparable and specific – not numbers hidden in the organizer’s drawer, but a tool for the growth of every contestant.

“One of the foremost objectives of the K. Ditters von Dittersdorf International Double Bass Competition is to ensure the highest possible degree of objectivity in the evaluation of all contestants.”

Slovak Double Bass Club

Why Dittersdorf

Three pillars of competition

01

Radical evaluation transparency

The scoring of each judge is public. Each contestant can compare how each member of the jury evaluated him individually — and compare himself to others. No other double bass competition does this.

02

An exceptional international jury

The jury consists of active soloists and teachers of the world’s top art schools and orchestras — artists who themselves have gone through the same path as the contestants.

03

Community,
not just results

Throughout the event, we consciously support the building of friendly relations between contestants, judges and organizers by creating opportunities for informal meetings, lectures and symposiums.

Where a contestant’s age falls within two categories, placement will be determined according to the type of school they attend.

Detailed explanation of categories — age overlap

A few examples:

A 16-year-old pupil attending a primary school of art shall compete in Category I.C, whereas a 16-year-old student attending a secondary school of art shall be placed in Category II.A.
Similarly, a 19-year-old student of a secondary school of art shall be assigned to Category II.B, while a 19-year-old student enrolled at a university or academy shall be placed in Category III.A.

Additional explanation for categories II.A 15–17 years. · II.B 18–20 years · III.A 18–22 years:

The age ranges of Categories I.C and II.A, as well as II.B and III.A, overlap owing to the structure of the Slovak education system. Elementary schools of art (ZUŠ – základná umelecká škola) admit pupils from the age of five and allow them to continue their studies beyond the point at which, typically around the age of fifteen, some students transfer to secondary schools of art offering a more advanced level of instruction. These secondary institutions, known as Konzervatórium in Slovakia, provide six-year programmes of study, thereby creating an overlap with universities and academies, which students may enter from the age of eighteen.

An Eminent Jury

The jury comprises highly experienced artists and educators who have followed comparable professional and educational paths. Its evaluations are transparent, structured, and substantive—not merely numerical scores retained by the organisers, but meaningful feedback designed to support the artistic development of each contestant.

Thomas Martin
Chair of the jury

Thomas Martin

🇬🇧 United Kingdom — Former solo double bassist, London Symphony Orchestra

Thomas Martin is one of the biggest figures in the double bass world of the last sixty years. He has twice held the position of principal double bassist of the London Symphony Philharmonic — one of the most respected orchestras on the planet — and has also played in the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. His series of recordings of the music of Giovanni Bottesini is still a gramophone benchmark: the Gramophone Magazine Record of the Year and Sunday Times Record of the Year awards are no small feat.

In addition to his playing career, Martin is a respected educator — he taught at the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal College of Music and held the International Chair of Double Bass at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. And that’s not all: in almost four decades, he has personally built more than 160 double basses under his brand. A man, a player, a teacher, a luthier — that’s how the chairman of the jury sets the bar.

Why Dittersdorf?

Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf

Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf
(1739–1799)

For double bassists, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf represents the very foundations of their instrumental heritage. The decision to name our competition after this giant of classicism stems from a deep respect for his work and from the fascinating connection of his work and life with our region.

The fact that K. Ditters was not only a composer but also a mentor is key for the international competition. It was he who led the legendary Johann Matthias Sperger. Through this connection, the pedagogic tradition of that time spills over to the present day, which symbolically links our competition to the line of handing down the championship from generation to generation.

Few composers have done as much for the double bass as Karl Ditters. His three concerts, duets and chamber music still define the technical and artistic boundaries of our instrument. By naming the competition after him, we are not only honoring history, but creating a living platform for young artists who are confronted today with the same technical rigor and nobility that this master put into his music more than two hundred years ago.

“Our commitment to the future of the double bass begins with a deep respect for its past.”
